The Fender Stratocaster is also one of my favorite years for the Stratocaster. It was the mid 60s and the surfing craze had hit. To cash in on it Leo Fender had really started ramping up the custom colored Stratocasters. However, there were quite a few minor changes including the first major change to the Fender headstock logo. It also has an added 4th patent number as well. Mid they added Patent Number 3,, to the logo. Another change that Fender made was using Pearloid dots instead of the so-called clay dots as fret markers on the neck. The image below shows the Pearloid dots on the right and the previously used clay dots on the left.
Notes: Notice anything strange about the front of the headstock? Where are the string trees? The roller nut eliminates the need for them. Production stopped in late or early All the Plus Series had similar features. This article discusses the Standard Plus.
Fender Stratocaster Are One Of The More Faked Vintage Guitars Out to early summer started stamping the bottom of the pickups with a yellow date on.
Vintage Fender pickups are highly sought after. Just finding these pickups is a challenge all its own. Even if one is purchased online at a hefty cost, how can you be sure of its vintage value? Up until , Fender did have several processes that can be measured to determine the date of their pickups. Even if you’ve never really used a multimeter, don’t be intimidated by it for this project. All we are going to deal with is measuring the ohms of a pickup, written as such on your meter or by the?
Turn on the multimeter and set it to the 20k ohms setting. At the beginning of , Fender was sold to CBS. Pickups that are found to be built prior to are considered extremely valuable. Pickups built after are still highly desirable and offer unique attributes in each year they were built as the pickup design and manufacturing process was enhanced and perfected.

Worldwide Shipping via Axetec Ltd. I was floored by the sound of this thing. I had a slight out-of-phase issue but this was quickly rectified.
These original pickups remained in Rory’s Stratocaster until early to mids. I know the sixth one broke at one date, and I just stuck another one on and I.
The Fender Stratocaster is the archetype electric guitar. When someone mentions “electric guitar,” the body shape and style of the Stratocaster is probably what comes to mind. The Stratocaster is a classic guitar because it has a great build and an equally great sound. Since its first model year in , the Stratocaster has kept its distinct body shape and notoriety. Most of the vintage Stratocasters considered to be the best were made before That year, Fender’s management transferred to CBS’s control.
This takeover marked a huge change in the company’s reputation. Because of this change, Stratocasters made after are typically not as valuable as ones made before the takeover. The Stratocaster is considered a revolutionary guitar, but it was never expected to be so influential. Leo Fender just wanted to make a great guitar — to improve on what was already done. However, it turned out very differently than the company’s previous model, the Telecaster. Freddy Tavares designed its distinct body shape and Don Randall gave it its name.
The Stratocaster also had three pickups instead of two. This feature, along with its other controls, gave guitarists more creativity through its greater tonal range.

Although CBS purchased Fender officially on January 3rd , it took some time till the guitars changed though by mid , six months before CBS bought Fender, things were already “on the way down”. By the end of , the general look and feel of the Fender guitars had changed significantly.

We explore their timeless magnetic attraction for guitar players. Carson also wanted four or five pickups on the Strat, but, fortunately, Leo had the good sense to veto that suggestion. Breaking one down into its individual components and examining manufacturing inconsistencies may provide some of the clues. Since the magnetic slugs were of a consistent diameter, holes were made in both the top and bottom flat that were tight enough to hold position on the slugs through friction alone.
Initially, the fibreboard was black, but this changed to grey around March of Later in the s, the grey got darker. I have never seen a pencil date on the base of a pre-CBS Strat pickup with black flat work. Fender started using a yellow date stamp when the grey bottoms appeared; however, this changed to a handwritten date around and, by the lates, Fender was using a black date stamp.
The height-adjustment screws were threaded into extended ears on the bottom flat. If you grind up some fibreboard with sandpaper, you can mix it with Super Glue, fill the screw holes then re-drill.

So you need to figure out the year of production for your Fender guitar or bass. You’re not alone. Fenders rank as the most frequently bought and sold instruments on Reverb , and finding a precise date of manufacture can be key to determining the value and specifics of an instrument. The most important thing to keep in mind when dating a Fender is the highly modular nature of the designs. Like Henry Ford, part of Leo Fender’s genius was in optimizing the company’s production efficiency.
His guitars were built en masse by an entire factory, not a single luthier toiling over one instrument at a time. Features like bolt-on necks and pickups wired into the pickguard all helped the Fender factory churn out guitar after guitar, day after day. This also means that various parts used on a particular guitar may have come from different points in time, so no single number can absolutely define when the instrument was built. Instead, the best approach to dating a Fender is to combine indicators from the design of the instrument, the dates found on the neck and body, along with the serial number.
Once you have the information you need, if you’re interested in selling your Fender, you can use Reverb to get it in front of the largest audience of musicians in the world by clicking on this link. Perhaps the best place to start when dating your Fender is to get an approximate idea of the era based on the instrument’s design and components. This can be a tall order for someone less versed in guitar history, but we do have some resources here on Reverb to help you out.
For starters, there’s the Reverb Price Guide which has thousands of entries with pictures and details on various guitars and other gear.
The story of how Rory came to own his Fender Stratocaster is somewhat interesting in itself. Jim allegedly ordered a red Stratocaster from the US but this sunburst came instead, so he had to use the guitar for around half a year until the red one would arrive. The previous owner was a guy in a showband. He originally ordered a red one so he could look just like Hank Marvin in The Shadows. But in those days Fenders only came into the country in ones and twos so he had to make do with a sunburst instead.
The BMG Special features three BM brand Tri-Sonic style single-coil pickups. a clean amp tone, the bridge pickup alone is pleasantly thin and quite Strat-like.
In typical Leo Fender fashion, the original Strat pickup was an ingeniously simple yet highly effective design. It consisted of a flat, black vulcanised fibre bottom and top plate held together via tension with six sandcast hand-bevelled alnico magnet slugs, fitted into each corresponding hole, around which a coil of gauge formvar wire was wound by hand. White hot and black ground cloth wires were then soldered on before the whole assembly was potted in hot wax to minimise feedback and overly microphonic tendencies.
Although the height of each pickup could be adjusted using screws on the surface of the scratchplate at either end of the coil each screw threading into the bottom flat with tension provided by surgical tubing , the relative height of each slug was fixed. To overcome this limitation, Leo had the polepieces staggered into differing lengths. The first black bottom pickups were identifiable by a prominent fourth string slug, with the third string slug rising to a similar level later.
There are many variables that impart certain characteristics and influence the overall sound of a pickup and some are far less calculable than others. Indeed, it is virtually impossible to identify two identical vintage examples, even on the same guitar. In addition, when a vintage pickup ages the magnetism tends to decrease, rounding out the top end and marginally improving string sustain.
After 10 years the formvar wire was changed to enamel. DC resistance tended to increase over the years from around 5. Initially, the polepieces measured 0. The lower strength Alnico III magnets used initally for a short time in were changed the following year to higher strength Alnico V magnets, which characteristically provided more scooped mids and tighter low-end.
Whereas dating grey bottom Strat pickups is normally a case of reading a date format either handwritten or stamped , black bottom Strat pickups tend to display no such information and therefore require dating by spec details.
